The Golden Age of Bond Street: How Cartier London Redefined Post-War Glamour

 

Our 29th September Jewellery & Watches auction features a stunning collection of mid-century Cartier pieces created in the autonomous London branch.

 

In the decades following the Second World War, the jewellery and fashion market underwent a dazzling metamorphosis.  

While Paris had long been regarded as the traditional epicentre of style, it was Cartier London on New Bond Street that captured the unique, triumphant spirit of the mid-1950s British upper classes.  Operating with a rare degree of creative independence from its sister branches in Paris and New York, the London house possessed its own specialised workshops managed under the legacy of Jacques Cartier.  As the UK finally emerged from the shadow of post-war austerity, Cartier London pioneered a design renaissance—replacing the icy platinum geometric styles of the pre-war Art Deco era for a more organic and sculptural aesthetic.

 

 

At the very heart of this design revolution was a dramatic shift in colour and texture, perfectly epitomised by this collection.  Moving away from traditional monochromatic diamond suites, Cartier’s craftsmen embraced a rich, autumnal palette that mirrored the natural world.  By pairing deep, octagonal-cut dark citrines with paler, pear-cut variations, such as in this floral clip, Cartier brought warmth and daytime wearability to high-end jewellery. 

 

The technical skill behind these warm gemstones is further showcased in the collection's standout piece: an 18ct yellow gold articulated leaf brooch, dated precisely to 1956.  Bearing the coveted "JC" sponsor mark and London hallmarks, this piece is a masterclass in mid-century goldsmithing.  Rather than using heavy, solid blocks of cast metal, the maker employed complex openwork wire techniques and mechanical articulation to allow the golden leaf to flex alongside the movement of the wearer's clothing.

 This impeccable craftsmanship extends across the entire consignment, which also includes a pair of floral clip earrings featuring octagonal and pear-cut citrines interspersed with diamonds, a pair of openwork flower earrings with a diamond cluster to the centre, and a pair of fern-style earrings set with rubies and diamonds.
