Important notice regarding jewellery, gemstones & watches.

Whilst we endeavour to be as accurate as possible in our lot descriptions, we are auctioneers and not gemmologists and prospective buyers should be aware that there are some areas where it is impossible for us to be completely certain without the use of a laboratory and specialist equipment.  We will state in the lot description when gemmological reports are available from the vendor, but please remember that gemmological societies and qualified gemmologists may still differ in assessments.  With regards to all stones and pearls, it is worth bearing in mind that these may have been replaced or re-set, therefore an antique ring setting may not contain the original stones, and vice-versa, an old stone may be set in a more modern piece.

Weights and measures are approximations, particularly when assessing multi-stone pieces.

Some lots may include notes regarding their condition, this does not imply that lots without condition notes are free from imperfections or in perfect condition.  Prospective buyers are strongly advised to view the sale in person; while we are happy to provide condition reports and extra images upon request, these are our opinion and not a guarantee of condition and quality, and photograph colours may not be an accurate representation of the pieces.

Please bear in mind the following notes before bidding:

Coloured Gemstones: Many coloured gemstones and jades have been 'enhanced' by treatments including heating, coating, oiling, bleaching and dyeing etc. These treatments are not always permanent.  The jewellery trade has largely accepted these methods, and buyers should assume that coloured gemstones and jades may have been treated in some way.

Diamonds: Any mention of colour and clarity are our opinion only while assessing stones in their settings, and not a guarantee.  Diamonds may also have been treated to enhance their appearance.

Hallmarks: We will state where possible if an item of gold, silver or platinum has been hallmarked or stamped.  This is not necessarily a guarantee that the marks are authentic.   We will have tested the approximate carat weight of a piece if is not marked, however this may not be sufficient to pass with the UK assay office.

Pearls: These are more often than not cultured and post-1920 unless otherwise stated.

Watches:   We do not have the tools to safely remove the backs from wristwatches. Whilst we are happy to state in a condition report whether a watch is currently in running order, this is no guarantee that the mechanism is free from faults and will continue working.  We are unable to authenticate every component or guarantee that watches have not been subjected to non-brand alterations or moderations.
