Sold for £3,000
A 1935 Austin Ascot 16hp 6 cylinder Saloon
Reg No. JT 2533
Chassis No. F/BX5329/15
Engine No. F/24333/15.
Black and ivory with brown leather interior.
In 1934 the Light Twelve series of cars benefited from the fitting of a 4-speed gearbox with synchromesh on the top two ratio’s and is fitted with the larger 1711cc 15.9hp six-cylinder engine.
This car was first registered by Dorset County Council on the 20th March 1935 by Watson’s of Lyme Regis in Dorset on behalf of a Mr Staples. The original brown logbook records this as 23rd March 1935 with an entry in the name of Louis Tom Staples dated 15th January 1946. It would appear that the vehicle remained in Dorset well into the 1960’s when a difficult to read entry shows a move to Essex. The car has probably had several Essex owners, the penultimate one to our vendors purchase in 2016 indicates prior ownership of 25 years during which major restoration was undertaken with accompanying photographs.
Upon purchase by our vendor in 2016 it was found that the engine was not in good condition, this unit was rebuilt by Brian Randall of BBR Engineering, Hepworth, Suffolk. Additionally, the fabric roof was recovered along with new running board rubbers and electrical components including distributor, coil, plugs and sundry wiring.
The car has been in storage since this work was undertaken and the engine will need running in. A video of the engine being started from cold is attached along with photographs. The condition of the car appears to be good, the only areas for improvement would be the lower part of the rear wings and rear valance. The interior has been refurbished and presents well.
Condition Report
Please note number plate is non-transferable.
We would suggest that the seats would have originally been a paler brown and slightly different pattern.
Two rear tyres are both showing cracks in the side walls.
Front lock in better condition with some light cracking.
Small split in nearside front wing and cracked paintwork near runningboard. Driver side front wing where it meets running board has some rust breaking out. Some crazing beneath belt line. Some flaking paint and corrosion around base of rear window and beltline from roof to rear panels.
Condition reports must be considered as a matter of opinion and not fact.
