Lot details

Autograph album, folio, half morrocco, frontboard loose, containing a large collection of A.L.S (autograph, letter, signed), mainly 19th century and earlier prominent figures - Royalty, peers, prime ministers, soldiers, diplomats, writers and painters. Over two hundred signatures including; George IV, Queen Victoria, Duke of Wellington, Admiral Saumarez, Sir Walter Scott, Gladstone, Disraeli, Landseer and Millais.
Some of the items have been affixed by a narrow strip, no more than ¼", along one edge using some form of paste and some using small hinges, all of which could be removed with care, but 2 have been affixed all over. Some items have been removed from the original collection and some added over the years. A select list of over 130 of the 200+ items present is available online, with extra images upon request  (1)
Provenance: The original owner and collector was Lady Charlotte Portal, fourth daughter of the 2nd Earl of Minto. Correspondence with it indicates that it was passed down in the family. It was entered into Sotheby's sale on 30th June 1938, was unsold, then passed into the hands of Henry Sotheran Ltd, then back to the family.

Of course, you are also very welcome to come along on the day!  We are located in the heart of beautiful Bury St Edmunds and have our own car park.

Most Mainland UK parcels can be sent in-house for our flat standard rate of £18 for up to 3 lots and £1.50 per lot thereafter.  European shipping rates and further details can be found here.

For outside of Europe, large or high value lots we recommend MailBoxes (details will be sent along with your invoice). If you choose an alternative courier we can pack for £8 per parcel.
