The Robin Butler collection of antique wine accessories
We are delighted to include within this auction some of the collection of wine accessories belonging to the late Robin Butler. This wonderful collection comprises silver wine-tasters, labels, coasters, goblets and much more including many original paintings and pieces of period furniture. Lots from this estate are marked throughout the catalogue with an * .
Robin began his collection of antique wine accessories back in 1976 while putting together an exhibition as part of the BADA Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The exhibition was a huge success and his subsequent pioneering book "The Book of Wine Antiques" spawned a fresh branch in the antiques collecting world and was equally enjoyed by those whose main interest is wine. Thirty years later, Robin wrote the "Great British Wine Accessories 1550 - 1900", which essentially became the Bible for antique wine accessory enthusiasts.
Robin joined the family antiques business in 1963, and was elected to the British Antique Dealers Association seven years later. His specialism in antique wine accessories made him the pre-eminent expert in his field over his long career. Robin gave talks and lectures to interested groups in Britain and the USA including the Silver Society, The Furniture History Society, The Wine Label Circle, The Smithsonian Institution, NADFAS and local collectors’ groups. He appeared on the 'Antiques Roadshow', 'Arthur Negus Enjoys', and 'Collectors Lot' television programmes, as well as writing specialist questions for 'Mastermind'.
We hope that you will join us in raising an imaginary glass in Robin’s memory and enjoy looking through his fascinating collection.
