Lot details

1934 Alvis Firefly Tourer

Registration No: AFY 850,

Chassis No: 11092,

Odometer 20143,

Cross & Ellis coachwork No: 53548. The first owner was supplied by Bambers of Southport, Lancs. Full detailed and documented restoration in 1974. The AFY 850 is featured in “Alvis Firefly Twelve” by Simon Fisher.

Powered by a 1496cc OHV four cylinder engine with its low slung “double dropped” ladder frame chassis, this Firefly Tourer drives strongly and smoothly reaching speeds over 70mph and was praised by the motoring press for its handling capabilities. The Alvis features the ENV 110 preselector gear box that has only recently had a complete refurbishment with all couplings replaced. Two previous owners, over a forty year period, were qualified engineers and the owner carrying out the meticulous restoration in the 70’s, logged over 2000 hours of work on this car. The reconditioned engine fitted then, has since only done 20,140 miles. All work undertaken has been fully documented. The car comes with a very large history file including correspondence with many manufacturers at the time and copies of the official works handbook.

All bright work has been rechromed, the interior professionally reupholstered, dashboard instruments overhauled by John Marks, completely rewired, running board timbers renewed with oak and the radiator, steering and rear axle differential renovated. Professional work on the body frame used teak and the bodywork has been topped off with a detailed application of fifteen coats of coach enamel. The hood and its operation with all side windows works perfectly.

An excellent example of a grand touring car from one of Britain’s major sporting marques.
