Dominique Antoine Jean-Baptiste Magaud (French 1817-1899) - The Captive (Venus), oil on canvas (re-lined, with repairs and restoration), signed and dated 1888 lower right, bearing Roy Miles Gallery label verso, 222 x 114cm, in giltwod and gesso frame
Provenance: Acquired by the present owner from Roy Miles Gallery of Mayfair circa 1998. Magaud is particularly noted for his large-scale interior projects including commissions for Charlemagne de Maupas to create 8 great allegorical ceilings and 32 smaller murals between 1865 and 1873. During this time he also painted the great ceiling for the Bourse which was destroyed by bombing in 1944. He was made director of his old alma mater the Académie de Marseilles in 1869 and devoted the rest of his career to the school.
